Tallaght Adult Learners' Fair

Institute of Technology, Tallaght - Co. Dublin
This unique fair brings together all those involved in community, further and higher education in Tallaght, to promote and celebrate the wide range of opportunities for lifelong learning in the area.
Agencies and organisations that can offer information, advice and support to adult learners who want to access education will also be present.
The fair will be of interest to adults who would like to return to learning - maybe for the first time since they left school - or for those who are on a course at present and would like to find out where to go next. It will also be a great opportunity for those who are considering a career change or who would like to improve their current career prospects. It will offer a chance to get information and advice and to meet people involved in all stages of adult education in an informal setting.

***M50 MAINLINE*** *
Until the end of Feb 2007 traffic management will be in place on the M50, Northbound and Southbound between Tallaght and the Westlink Toll Bridge both day and night. From Mon 9th to Thurs 18th Jan 2007 the hard shoulder and lane 1 will close Southbound between the N4 and N7 Interchange. From Thur 18th Jan to Sat 3rd Feb 07 from 22:00-06:00 each night the hard shoulder and lane 1 will close on the M50 Northbound between the N7 and N4 Interchange. On Thurs 11th Jan 07 to 06:00 on Fri 12th Jan lane 1 will be closed of the M50 Northbound under the N7 Interchange.
***N7 Interchange***
On Fri 12th Jan 2007 at 22.00 until 06.00 Sat 13th the M50 Southbound off-ramp onto the N7 will close, diversions will be via Ballymount or the long Mile Road. On Thurs 18th from 22.00 to 06.00 Fri 19th Jan 2007, the east side of the N7 Roundabout and the Naas Rd inbound will be reduced to one lane running. On Fri 19th Jan at 22.00 to 06.00 Sat 20th Jan lane 1 of the Naas Rd inbound will be closed.
***N4 Interchange*** The future free-flow at the N4 interchange will open just after Christmas 2006. The slip road leading from the N4 Eastbound (i.e coming from Leixlip and the west) will allow motorists to turn left to go north on the M50 towards the toll bridge, without having to go through traffic lights. Until the end of December there is a new road layout at the M50 Northbound on-ramp from the N4 interchange. Until mid January 2007 the N4 inbound bus lane from the Liffey Valley footbridge to the M50 Interchange will remain closed day and night. Until January 2007 the Old Lucan Road turning bay will be closed. Until the end of January 2007 a new Road Layout for the N4 Lucan Road inbound to the N4 Roundabout is in operation. From Mon 15th Jan 2007 there's a new layout inbound on the N4 Lucan Rd to the roundabout.
On Tue 9th and Wed 10th the N4 Lucan Rd inbound to the M50 Northbound on-ramp will be closed from 22.00 to 06.00 the next day. The same closure will also take place on Mon 15th Jan. Diversions will be in place via the N7 Interchange. On Mon 15th Jan the N4 Lucan Rd inbound will be reduced to one lane running from 22.00 to 06.00 Tue 16th Jan.

On Mon 8th Jan the M50 Southbound off ramp to Ballymount East will be closed from 22.00 to 06.00 the next day. A new road layout will be in place until the end of March 2007. On Mon 22nd Jan from 22.00 to 06.00 Tue 23rd Jan 2007, Ballymount to Embankment Rd will be reduced to one lane running. From the 8th to the 30th March 2007, there will be a new road layout on the M50 southbound to Ballymount east.

ASBOs come into force from 1st January: Report
iol.ie repeats an Irish Times report this morning that "the Government's controversial Anti-Social Behaviour Orders will come in to force for adults on New Year's Day.
"ASBOs are also planned for children aged between 12 and 18, but these won't be introduced until March.
"According to this morning's Irish Times, from January 1st, any Garda will be able to apply to a District Court to obtain an ASBO against an adult who is causing “harassment, persistent alarm or distress, fear or intimidation” to others."

Call for legal recognition of same sex unions
LEGAL RECOGNITION OF SAME SEX UNIONS MUST BE PRIORITY FOR 2007 - LABOUR PARTY STATEMENT
The Leader of the Labour Party, Pat Rabbitte TD, has said that the issue of legal recognition of and proper protection for couples in same sex relationships must be a priority for the Oireachtas in 2007.
“I am confident that the our society has matured and attitudes changed sufficiently to the point where the majority of our people would have no problem with legislation that would provide same-sex couples with the same basic rights and duties that are available to married couples.
“Shortly before Christmas, my colleague Brendan Howlin TD, published, on behalf of the Labour Party, a private members bill that would create a status relationship equivalent to marriage for the benefit of people who are of the same sex and who, under the current constitutional understanding of marriage, cannot marry each other. The Bill provides that, in most respects, the rules of law applying to marriage would also apply to civil unions.
“If passed, this Bill would have an immediate, significant and practical impact on the everyday lives of gay and lesbian couples. Those who choose to enter into a civil union would enjoy vital legal rights which married couples take for granted, in areas such as inheritance and taxation. The Bill would bring to end many of the routine forms of institutionalised discrimination that exist in our society and which impinge on in a very real way on people’s lives."

"Housework cuts risk of breast cancer" - study
According to a report in The Scotsman newspaper, moderate housework cuts the risk of developing breast cancer.
The claim comes from a study conducted on a sample of 218,169 women, aged 20 to 80, in nine European countries.
"Pre-menopausal women who did housework were 30 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer than pre-menopausal women who did none, while post-menopausal women who did housework were 20 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those who did none."

Runaway success of Luas sees 26m use trams in 2006
FOUR million more people used the Luas tram network last year, mainly due to a 25pc increase in numbers travelling between Tallaght and the city centre.
The number of passengers using the Tallaght line (red line) went up from 11m in 2005 to 14m last year, while the shorter route stretching from St Stephen's Green to Sandyford went up from 11.2m in 2005 to 11.9m for 2006.

Sir Bono to join ranks of Sir Bob and Sir Tony
U2 singer, Bono, is to receive an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, according to a report on the RTE website. The honour will be presented by the British Ambassador to Ireland in the New Year. It comes on the recommendation of Tony Blair, who stated in a letter that Bono was influential in the run-up to last year's G8 summit which had a focus on helping poor nations in Africa.
Bono will be a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or KBE.

Mobile phone unlocking service comes to Tallaght
A new, independent, mobile phone unlocking and repair service has opened. Based in Tallaght Enterprise Centre and run by local man, Patrick Murphy, Phonexpo claims to be an affordable alternative to the major mobile operators for customers having problems using their mobile handsets.
Set up originally on the Internet as an online help forum for Irish mobile phone users, the Web-based business has already grown and expanded outside the Dublin region. Patrick Murphy says:
“It is badly needed as many Irish consumers feel they are being overcharged by our current four networks with regards to mobile phone repair and unlocking.
“For example, the standard charge to have your phone unlocked by the network is €127 and currently on one particular network if you require your unlock code you have to end your contract immediately. Phonexpo offer the same service from €15-€30 depending on the make and model of the phone.”
Unlocking codes are needed when customers forget their phone’s security number or wish to change to another service provider while keeping the original handset. Over 3,000 people have registered in the past year on the http://www.phonexpo.ie/ forum to enquire about fixes for mobile phone problems.
The new local office is run in person by Patrick Murphy who says:
“We can have most phones repaired or unlocked within 5 working days. Repairs can include fixing keyboard damage, broken screens, even fixing the software that runs the phone.
“A popular ‘repair’ is changing the phone’s language. There has been a lot of interest in this from Spanish, Polish, Romanian customers.”
According to Patrick, Phonexpo is a business to fill a growing need for a structured service for mobile phone users. He says he offers a professional service but on a straightforward, friendly level. There is a “no fix, no fee” policy, and all services come with a 30-day guarantee. In addition, Phonexpo offers free return postage to its Irish & UK clients.
Patrick is optimistic that the business will continue to flourish.
“With the growing amount of mobile phone users and the ever growing population of Tallaght, Phonexpo as an independent business will do quite well in the community.
“Over the last four to five years, Tallaght has become nearly its own city. I see Phonexpo alongside the growing popularity of mobile phones and the even bigger growing population of Tallaght doing quite well in the future for many a year. It will be Phonexpo’s objective to offer this service to the community of Tallaght and adjoining communities.”

Millbrook Lawns Health Centre: Works begin May 2007
According to a reply received by Cllr Joe Neville (FF) to a Councillor's question, South Dublin County Council expects construction work on the Millbrook Lawns Health Centre to begin in May 2007.
The centre, which was damaged by fire in 1998, has had both planning permission and HSE funding passed. In its bulletin to Cllr Neville, the Council stated:
"Funding has been made available in the HSE National Capital Plan 2006 – 2010 for the refurbishment of Millbrook Lawns Health Centre. The plan was formally approved by the Department of Health and Children in May 2006.
"Approval was received to seek tenders for re-instatement of and improvement works at the Health Centre and tenders will be sought on 31/01/07. These improvements will reflect the modern standards that are inherent in the Primary Care Strategy that is currently being rolled out nationally by the HSE.
"Some final issues need to be agreed with the local Parish Council before work can commence. Architects for both sides are meeting to resolve these matters.
"The target construction programme for this development, subject to consideration of tenders and finalisation of all outstanding matters is as follows:
- Return of Tenders 28/02/07
- Award of tenders 21/03/07
- Commencement of work on site May ‘07
- Completion of work in 3 phases to be fully completed by 30/05/’08."

FAI to "support" Shamrock Rovers court case: Website
The Football Association of Ireland has pledged financial assistance for the Shamrock Rovers High Court case involving Tallaght GAA club Thomas Davis, according to the soccer club's website.
The Thomas Davis Club is seeking a Judicial Review of the South Dublin County Council decision last February to proceed with the completion of the Stadium in Tallaght as a football only facility.
According to the report, FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney, is quoted as saying:
“This week, the Board of the Association pledged significant funds to [Shamrock Rovers] in order to aid them in the most practical manner as they continue to pursue the goal of completion of Tallaght. These funds will be offset against the legal fees Rovers face as the High Court case continues. Obviously, we wish the club every success in this matter.”
On 14th December, the High Court determined that the hearing of the case would take place on March 16th next.

Recycling in South Dublin County area Christmas & New year
Green Bins
Additional dry recyclable material may be left beside the Green Bin from 18th December to 27th January 2007 only provided
- It is clean and bound securely
- It is left in a safe manner for collection
- It contains material that normally goes into the Green Bin only.
- The material should not be put in a plastic bag. Large cardboard boxes and sheets of cardboard should be cut into smaller pieces or brought to the nearest Civic Amenity Centre.

Man, 37, arrested in connection with Ipswich murders
The BBC is reporting this morning that a man, aged 37, has been arrested in connection with the murder of five prostitutes in the English town of Ipswich.
The man was arrested at his home address at Trimley, near Felixstowe.
Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Tania Nicol, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls, were murdered over the past number of weeks and their bodies dumped in the Ipswich area.

No new bin labels in 2007: Council
South Dublin County Council has confirmed that customers using their domestic refuse collection service will not be receiving a new authorisation label in early 2007.
Instead, the purple "Jan-07" label, supplied in 2006, will continue to be valid into 2007 past the January expiry. Bin tags will still be in use in 2007.

Council will come to you for Christmas Tree
South Dublin County Council is introducing a new pilot scheme for the recycling of Christmas trees from houses in urban areas in the County, according to a press relase published on the Council's Website.
The pilot scheme will operate from Monday 8th January to Friday 12th January only. Householders should place their Christmas tree outside their house on the morning of their normal refuse bin collection and the Parks Department staff will collect the trees on that day. (Not necessarily at the same time as the bin collection.) The trees will be shredded and the material will be used in local parks as a mulch and soil conditioner.
Householders who are unable to avail of this service may bring their tree to the Council’s Green Waste Recycling Centre at Esker, Lucan where it can be left for recycling free of charge. The Centre operates from Tuesday to Saturday and the opening hours are as follows:-

Saturday 8.30am – 2.30pm

The Council warns that Christmas trees should not be brought to a park or open space, as was done in previous years when the Council provided central collection points. Instead, anyone found dumping trees or other materials on open spaces may be liable to prosecution under the Litter Act.

The Dodder Valley 125 years ago
Press Release: On Wednesday 20th December at 8.00pm, the Local Studies Section of the County Library in Tallaght in association with Tallaght Historical Society will host a slide show The Dodder from Glenasmole to Ringsend in 1881 - An illustrated Lecture using slides taken by Charles Russell. The slide show will be given by Peter Healy, a nephew of the photographer using old glass plate slides. Peter is a brother of the late Paddy Healy, archaeologist and local historian whose books, “All Roads Lead to Tallaght”, “Rathfarnham Roads”, “Glenasmole Roads” and “Archaeology, Early Christian Remains and Local Histories” have been published by South Dublin Libraries.
This is an opportunity not to be missed, a chance to view some remarkable photographic material using a forgotten technology.

Migrants' website to increase to 10 languages: Indo
The Independent reports today that vaveeva.com, a website with information aimed at helping migrants settle in Ireland, is to be extended to include a total of 10 languages.

Joe Neville on the roads
Councillor Joe Neville (FF) has received several replies from the South Dublin County Council's Roads Department to questions about the DSW area:
- In regard to his request for the provision of a pedestrian crossing at the top of the opposite side (south bound) off ramp on the Knocklyon/M50 Interchange, Cllr Neville has been informed that a traffic count is being carried out at the location.
- Regarding Tallaght Village, it has been reported that traffic flows will be returned to their original configuration once works underway there have been completed. However, the traffic lights sequence on the N81/Old Bawn junction will be examined, especially the evening right-turn onto the Old Bawn Road from the N81.
- There are no plans to erect “No Parking of HGV’s" signs in Glenview Park Estate, as this matter was already dealt with by the erection of signage on all roads entering and exiting the County.
- The Bus-only exit adjacent to The Square cannot be modified to allow taxis to also use the exit. The mechanism which changes the traffic lights at this location to allow buses through cannot differentiate between taxis and private cars.
- The roundabout at Tallaght Hospital will be provided with new road markings once building works in the area are completed. It has been determined that the pedestrian lights in that vicinity are in the optimum position and will not be moved.
- Pedestrian light phasing at the Belgard Road/Embankment Road junction will be part of the 2007 works.
- The turn from Ballymount Road, Kingswood onto Belgard Road cannot be provided with a left filter lane due to insufficent room to create a left-turning lane in the road.
- Following problems with all-day parking by passengers on the nearby LUAS, Belgard Heights, the Heath and the View may get double-yellow lines subject to formal consultation with the Garda Commissioners Office. A yellow box is to be provided on the road at Kingswood View and the Old Belgard Road. There are no plans to change the existing island at Embankment Road/Kingswood, Luas Station, which is considered to be adequate.

"A Loan Is Not Just for Christmas": Regulator
Press Release: The Financial Regulator today (Tuesday, 5 December) warned people to consider their choices when borrowing money this Christmas and to look for the most suitable loan for their needs, taking the overall cost of any loan into account before signing up.
Consumer Director, Mary O’Dea said, “Borrowing money at this time of year may be the only way for some people to meet Christmas expenses. But remember that once Christmas is over, the money is spent and you will have to make repayments long after the Christmas holiday. There are many ways of borrowing money, such as using an overdraft, taking out a personal loan, or spending on your credit card and while it might seem handy to use your credit card or in-store credit to pay for many of your Christmas expenses, these can end up costing you more in the long term. You will generally pay more for the convenience of in-store loans, using your credit card or availing of door to door credit collection. Think first what type of credit suits you best and how much it costs”.
"Once you have decided what type of loan you want, look beyond what the repayments will cost you every week or every month until the loan is repaid and ask the provider what the total cost of the loan is. This is what you will have to pay back to the lender in addition to the money you have borrowed. The cost of credit will vary depending on the amount you borrow, where you get your loan and how long you take to pay it back. The quicker you pay it back, the less interest you will pay. It can seem attractive to go for lower monthly repayments by taking longer to repay the loan but this will cost more because you will pay more interest. So weigh up what suits you best and how much you can really afford to borrow,” she added.
How much does borrowing money actually cost?*
· Jacqui borrows €1,000 from her bank for Christmas. Her loan is to be repaid over 12 months, paying back €89 per month**. In total she pays back €1,068 meaning the total cost of credit is €68.
· Pat borrows €500 from a moneylender to pay for Christmas presents. He pays back €20 a week for 32 weeks. The total cost of this loan is €140.***
· Claire borrows €700 from her local credit union where she has been saving for some time and has had loans in the past. She pays back €61.50 a month over the next year. The total cost of her credit union loan is €38.****
· Jim uses his credit card***** to pay for a few nights out running up to Christmas and presents for his family. When Jim gets his bill after Christmas, he owes €1,200. He pays €200 every month for six months, paying back a total of €1,200. At the end of the six months, he still owes €39 on his card due to interest.

You're dead, now here's your bill
The Government has announced that elderly patients of long-term nursing homes will be billed both before and after they die. Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, has set a new scheme for the long term care of the elderly in motion which will commence in January 2008.
Under the scheme, all nursing home patients must contribute towards the cost of their care. According to the RTE website:
"Elderly people will contribute 80% of their disposable income and a charge of up to 15% on the value of their residence will apply, which can be paid after their death.
"Only elderly people assessed to be high dependency will be eligible for nursing home bed support from next year and there will be a cap on the scheme.
"Those who are assessed to be low or medium dependency will be eligible for community care with support through home care packages.
"Ms Harney has described the scheme as fair, accessible, and affordable."

You can only buy cigs in 20s
Mr Sean Power TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children announced yesterday evening (7th December) that it will be illegal to sell cigarettes in packs of less than 20 from 31 May 2007. The sale of confectioneries that resemble tobacco products will also be banned from that date.
Speaking at the official opening of the Office of Tobacco Control offices in Naas, Mr Power said “a recent report “Children, Youth and Tobacco” tells us that 76% of young people purchase 10 packs of cigarettes. The preference for 10 packs has been shown internationally to be linked to price – which is also an important factor in young people deciding not to smoke. I believe that the removal of packs of 10 will be a clear disincentive to young people to start the habit and continue smoking.”

Central Bank warns on counterfeit notes
As the use of cash hits its peak at this time of year, the Central Bank warned that there is a corresponding increase in the opportunities for counterfeiters to pass off counterfeit banknotes to unsuspecting consumers. The Central Bank urged shoppers and those celebrating the Christmas season to be extra vigilant for counterfeit notes in the coming days and weeks, as this is an ideal time of the year for counterfeits to enter circulation.A spokesperson for the Central Bank said: "Anyone who suspects they have a counterfeit banknote should pass it over to their local Gardai. Euro banknotes are produced to the highest standards and contain security features which are hard to counterfeit. It should be relatively easy to spot counterfeits and we would remind people to stay alert over the Christmas period.”
The Central Bank is advising consumers to check any suspect banknote by using the simple FEEL-LOOK-TILT test. This includes:
· Feel – the printing processes give banknotes their unique feel, which includes raised print.
· Look –when the banknote is held up to the light a picture and the value of the banknote become visible as a watermark, while the security thread can also be seen as a dark line.
· Tilt – on the lower denomination notes (EUR 5, 10, 20), a hologram appears on the foil stripe on the front of the banknote. On the higher value notes (EUR 50,100, 200, 500) a hologram appears on the foil patch on the front of the banknote.
In order to help shopkeepers maintain sufficient change in their tills, the Central Bank also reminded the public to use their coins and low value banknotes when paying for purchases.
Over 3 billion euro coins have been put into circulation in Ireland since 2002, and these are especially important at Christmas time, when the use of cash increases. Further information on the banknote security features is available on the Central Bank’s website: www.centralbank.ie.

Wokmen cook up a storm
The Tallaght Echo reports this week on its front page how an army of Wokmen made life hell for a Tallaght resident when they entered his garden on the advice of a builder and cooked Chinese food non-stop until he agreed to pay a long-standing takeaway bill...The story, which was the main feature in the local newspaper of Thursday, December 7th, was actually about a builder who, with "an army of workmen" trespassed on a property on which he had been building an extension and removed windows without the client's permission. He had been in dispute with the owner over a payment which the client refused to make as he was dissatisfied with the quality of work. Convicting him of trespass, the judge fined the builder €1,250, plus costs, with a six-months suspended sentence.

The drivers say they are paid €4 per hour, with an additional payment to them of €1.50 per delivery. They are looking for their pay to be increased to €5 per hour and the per-delivery payment to €2, which they say would be in line with other outlets in the franchise.
"When we try to speak to the company about this issue, they won't discuss it," said driver Uzair Ahmad, who is spokesman for the drivers.
The drivers started their protest action last night when they downed tools and refused to do any deliveries for the night. They are planning to picket the Tallaght outlet again today at 5pm and say they will again refuse to do any deliveries. [Read rest of report]

Labour Party Deputy for Dublin South Central, Dr Mary Upton TD, has welcomed last night’s confirmation by Dublin City Council that the owner of Presentation Convent in Terenure that was recently illegally demolished must reinstate the building.
Deputy Upton commented, "I am absolutely delighted that Council planning enforcement officers are grasping the nettle and demanding reinstatement of the building.
"This charming, historic building was being actively considered for listing on the Record of Protected Structures prior to demolition. Much of the demolished building dated to the 1830's. It was one of the last intact mansions in Terenure.
"I will follow this case very closely, as indeed will the large number of local people who have been in touch with me to protest against its demolition.
"I am very much in favour of development. But taking the law into your own hands and breaching the planning laws like this developer appears to have done gives all developers a bad name."

Councillor Neville [FF] questions planning of Kingswood antennae
Councillor J. Neville submitted the following question to the County Manager at a meeting of Tallaght Area Committe 2 on Monday, November 27, 2006:
"To ask the Manager to outline the planning history if any, of the numerous antennae in the vicinity of Kingswood Shopping Centre and will the Manager confirm if the erection of such antennae is exempted development and on what legislative basis would they be considered such?"
REPLY
Planning application SD03A/INV11 was received on 24/01/2003 for retention of 2 GSM panel antennas, No. 1 transmission link dish mounted on a 3m steel support structure plus associated equipment container at UNIT 3, Kingswood Shopping Centre, Sylvan Drive, Dublin 24. The applicant was Irene Kavanagh - O2 Ireland , Lower Baggot Street.
On 31/01/2003 the application was invalidated as it was not in compliance with the requirements of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001
Planning application SD03A/0156 was received from Barney O Hare at Unit 1, Kingswood Shopping Centre on 18/03/2003 for retention of Satelite signal receiving antennae to rear elevation, box type internally illuminated sign on gable and 2 no. posters/advertisements in front windows either side of entrance door.
On 07/05/2003 a decision was made to grant permission for retention. No appeal was lodged against this decision.
Planning application SD03A/0342 was Received on 29/05/2003 from Irene Kavanagh - O2 Ireland , Lower Baggot Street , for No. 2 GSM panel antennas, No. 1 transmission link dish mounted on a 3m steel support structure plus associated equipment container at Unit 3, Kingswood Shopping Centre, Sylvan Drive, Tallaght, Dublin 24.
On 18/06/2003 the application was deemed to be invalid as the site notice was found not to comply with the requirements of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001.
Planning application SD03A/0463 was received on 04/07/2003 for permission for 2 No. GSM panel antennas, 1 No. transmission link dish mounted on a 3m steel support structure plus associated equipment container at Unit 3, Kingswood Shopping Centre, Sylvan Drive, Tallaght, Dublin 24. The application was submitted by Irene Kavanagh of O2 Ireland , Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2.
On 28/08/2003 the Council refused permission for this proposal.
No appeal was lodged against this decision.
Under the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, the erection of mobile telecommunication masts and antennae may be considered to be exempted development provided that certain Conditions and Limitations are complied with (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 31 of the Regulations refers).
Notwithstanding the above exempted development Regulations, the erection of antennae on the Clocktower Public House is currently under investigation by Planning Enforcement. A Warning Letter dated 26th October 2006 pursuant to Section 152 of the Act was served on the owner/ occupier in this regard. However, the investigation will now be broadened to include an investigation into the status of all antennae erected at Kingswood Shopping Centre. The Councillor will be kept informed as this investigation progresses.

The applicant was Irene Kavanagh - O2 Ireland , Lower Baggot Street.
On 31/01/2003 the application was invalidated as it was not in compliance with the requirements of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001
Planning application SD03A/0156 was received from Barney O Hare at Unit 1, Kingswood Shopping Centre on 18/03/2003 for retention of Satelite signal receiving antennae to rear elevation, box type internally illuminated sign on gable and 2 no. posters/advertisements in front windows either side of entrance door.
On 07/05/2003 a decision was made to grant permission for retention. No appeal was lodged against this decision.

On 18/06/2003 the application was deemed to be invalid as the site notice was found not to comply with the requirements of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001.
Planning application SD03A/0463 was received on 04/07/2003 for permission for 2 No. GSM panel antennas, 1 No. transmission link dish mounted on a 3m steel support structure plus associated equipment container at Unit 3, Kingswood Shopping Centre, Sylvan Drive, Tallaght, Dublin 24. The application was submitted by Irene Kavanagh of O2 Ireland , Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2.
On 28/08/2003 the Council refused permission for this proposal.
No appeal was lodged against this decision.
Under the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, the erection of mobile telecommunication masts and antennae may be considered to be exempted development provided that certain Conditions and Limitations are complied with (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 31 of the Regulations refers).
Notwithstanding the above exempted development Regulations, the erection of antennae on the Clocktower Public House is currently under investigation by Planning Enforcement. A Warning Letter dated 26th October 2006 pursuant to Section 152 of the Act was served on the owner/ occupier in this regard. However, the investigation will now be broadened to include an investigation into the status of all antennae erected at Kingswood Shopping Centre. The Councillor will be kept informed as this investigation progresses.

Irish Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society Christmas Service

Maternity leave increase: Minister
According to a report at breakingnews.iol.ie, the Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Seamus Brennan, has announced that from March next year, new mothers will be entitled to 26 weeks paid leave - an increase of four weeks.

"Proud to Live in Tallaght" Workbook Launched
Pat Rabbitte, T.D. launched the "Proud to Live in Tallaght" activity workbook for schoolchildren in Tallaght on Monday 13th November in the Dublin West Education Centre. The workbook, designed by local teacher Robert O'Leary, is dubbed "An activity book for children in Tallaght schools" and is accompanied by a Website, tallaght4kids, which was sponsored by the DWEC and Tallaght Partnership.
In the Foreword, Gerard McHugh, Director of the DWEC says: "The purpose of our activity book is to demonstrate why we are proud of Tallaght, to help us to become aware of its reality and its potential and to renew the ambition of a new generation of inhabitants in Tallaght, in this era encompassing citizens who have come from all over the globe. The activity book does not attempt to present all there is to know about Tallaght, rather it provides us with enough information about interesting aspects of Tallaght's past and present that we want to embark on a discovery to find out more and more of that past and present. Furthermore it encourages us to discuss Tallaght, to reflect on it, to explore, to investigate and to discover. Ultimately this activity book envisages a new generation of Tallaght's young people demonstrating their pride in their own place by wishing to emulate the positive achievements of the past and present and by creating their own new history which will inspire generations to come. Hearing into application for judicial review of Tallaght Stadium plan adjourned
According to the Shamrock Rovers website, an application by Tomas Davis GAA Club seeking leave for a Judicial Review of the decision taken by South Dublin County Council to complete the development of the partially complete Stadium in Tallaght was to be heard by the High Court on Friday 24th November 2006. However, the matter was put back for mention on December 3rd 2006 due to a shortage of judges.
The 10,000 seat soccer stadium was originally planned and partially constructed by the Dublin club in 2000 before funding ran out.

This new alliance is with Ireland's premier security training body. The Irish Security Training Association has been the forerunner in establishing and maintaining standards in the security industry. We are offering their Static & Patrol Security - Basic Job Training course in our spring programme. On successful completion of the course a person is qualified for the Private Security Authority Registration in line with NSAI.999:2004. We are very pleased to be associated with the ISTA, which has its headquarters locally in Cookstown Industrial Estate. Connect’s mission is to deliver a free, easy to use service that enables local communities to use technology in innovative ways to achieve their goals and to put local content on the world wide web. Connect includes a range of complementary projects and strategies that will be implemented in South Dublin County. The combined impact of these strategies working together will achieve the vision. The projects are:
· Connect Me presents an extensive range of local information using an online interactive mapping system, creating a place where people can find accurate information easily and quickly about their community
· Connect Web supports all community groups in South Dublin County to create their own internet content that will facilitate improved information management and develop new methods of collective engagement
· Connect School in St Aidan’s Community School, Brookfield, is developing student centred technology through an innovative learning culture in order to improve school attendance, participation in class and educational outcomes for the students
· Connect Centres is creating a network of Digital Learning Hubs in local Community Centres where local people can access and learn about technology in their own communities, transforming the digital divide into digital inclusion
As well as the timetabled workshops... there will be many exciting displays and promotions in the Council Foyer in Tallaght over the 2 week period including, various community groups promoting the work they do and their Connect built websites, private companies promoting their online services, interactive displays, competitions and lots lots more!

Irish Seamen's Relatives Association (1939-46)
"The publication of research initiated from 1986 into the loss of the Steam Trawler Leukos [and] SS Ardmore and the disclosure of the Irish Government's failure during the period 1939-46 to Register the Deaths of Seamen lost on Irish vessels has generated many enquiries from families and survivors. Consequently the Irish Seamen’s Relatives Association (1939-46) has been specifically formed to provide as much information as possible for the benefit of relatives of seafarers who were killed as a direct result of belligerent action while serving on neutral Irish Registered Vessels during World War Two. "No question" of Hospital downgrade, Children's closure: Lenihan
Minister of State, Conor Lenihan, TD (FF), has said there is "no question" of a downgrade to Tallaght Hospital and that reports to the contrary by the Labour party are "misrepresenting the situation." Mr Lenihan made his remarks in a letter to constituents in the Dublin South-West area.

Tallaght Leisure Centre to open November 13th
Tallaght Leisure Centre is now nearing practical completion, with a number of minor works to be completed. South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd. has been appointed to manage the facility on behalf of the Council and they are currently engaged in testing of the plant and machinery and will also carry out training for the staff to be employed at the centre. Over 8,000 Attend Hallowfest Festival
Over 8,000 people attended the first Hallowfest festival in South Dublin County last weekend 29th and 30th October which was organised by South Dublin County Tourism Board to encourage people to celebrate Halloween in a fun way for all the family. With the help of street performers, Halloween games and a supervised fireworks display the weekend was a great success and will now become an annual national event.
Chairman of The Tourism Board David Kennedy said, "We are delighted with the turn out at the festival, with approx 8,000 people who attended the various events over the whole weekend and many more thousand who viewed the fireworks display. It was reported that the fireworks could be seen as far as Finglas on the North side. We look forward to next year building on the success of this year."
With the majority of children who attended dressed up and taking part in the many games there was a constant buzz about the place. One young girl who attended, 8yr old Sophie Sinclair from Saggart said, "It was brilliant, I got to make a cool mask and lantern in the make and do work shop and then my Granddad brought on me the treasure hunt, we had a great time."

Speaking of the future and in relation to your posting on the rapid development of Tallaght Town Centre, I share your sentiments entirely. Yes, bring on the future!
The past twenty or so months have been a dismal time in my life, due to the continuing decline in my dear mothers health. I watch her now, a mere shadow of herself and wonder what God of Mercy could there be to subject such a kind, generous, gregarious and loving person to such a hell on Earth ?
I'm heartened though by the wonderful memories of her prior to her illness and take comfort in the knowledge that she wants life to go on for us all with a happy and positive outlook. Her only means of communication at this time is in her eyes, and can she smile through those eyes - you better believe it!
She is some woman for one woman.
Will post again asap. In the meantime repeated good wishes with the new venture.

Cranes becoming endangered species in Tallaght
Cranes are being replaced by elegant buildings in Tallaght as more and more of the construction work around The Square reaches that sudden stage of near-completion. Stuck in a traffic jam that wound its way around Belgard Square this evening, I admired the new shop fronts and the even newer, uncompleted units that gape out from under the apartments, their unfinished ground-floors filled with white dust and oddments of builder's rubble. The hoardings are now gone and the most minimal of fences keep the public out. Gangs of second fixers march about, shouldering cable reels and pneumatic drills. Heavy construction machinery is being supplanted by fork-lifters, shopfitters, glaziers peering out through new spans of modern glass. It's great. Come on the future! I love it!

Thanks for letting me know about the blog - I promise to familiarise myself with the system and I also promise to try to contribute as much as I can over the next while. I am just back from a very successful canvass with my Party Leader Pat Rabbitte and need to put my feet up - am nursing a pretty bad fluey/coughy/coldy thing at the moment and the beautiful bright and crisp but very very very cold weather up here in the hills is not helping me in my situation! I think my other half is going to mind the kids while I go to bed and try to unsmother myself. Talk soon.

Christmas Sing Along St Maelruains Parish
This annual event will take place on Friday 1st December in the parish centre at 7.00pm. We will be joined again this year by the D.C.C. singers and a visiting Brass Band.Come along and get into the festive spirit while singing Christmas carols, shopping for gifts and hand made decorations made by the craft group including hand made Christmas cards, decorations, hand knitted items, decorated logs and hand make cakes and enjoy a glass of wine and mince pies. Buy a raffle ticket and you may even solve some of your Christmas present list dilemmas!
