A Lucan-based centre for suicide prevention and self-harm is set to expand, branching out to North Clondalkin, Tallaght and Finglas.
Pieta House say they will provide outreach services for people affected by suicide or harboring suicidal feelings. They aim to provide outreach services to most of Dublin city throughout 2008.
Staff at Pieta House are also hoping to see out the year with a new centre being established in rural areas of the country. Established in 2006, Pieta House is a community based counselling service, the first of its kind in Ireland and works with those who have attempted suicide or self-harm, as well as their families. The clinical director of the Rutland Centre says he is "stunned at the severe escalation in the use of cocaine".
Stephen Rowen, from the residential clinic in Templeogue, South Dublin, specialising in addiction, said, "It is no longer news to say that we have a problem in Ireland -- but it is news to realise just how much of a problem we have. Heroin is a severe problem, but it seems to have plateaued. But with cocaine it just seems to keep getting bigger and bigger.
"I can only say that, of the 250 residents we see in a year, more and more people are coming in and reporting their high-level cocaine use. More than ever before.
"I don't know why, although there are theories out there. Too much money, too much alienation, increased urbanisation. A lack of attachment to any local community or family.
"Affordability is a big factor. The cost dropped by about 40pc between 1985 and 1999, but production has gone up."
He said that there is a definite hierarchy, with cocaine users looking down on the heroin users, meaning it is difficult for many to admit they have a problem at all.
"They see cocaine as a party drug, a fun thing, a cool thing."
He argues that this is the key factor in the demand for cocaine -- its acceptance in "polite" society.

Greenhills Variety Group takes show to International Festival
Greenhills Variety Group goes to the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera on September 23rd with its show "Thoroughly Modern Millie."
The Group, which has been active for 45 years, won the Best Choreography category in the Association of Irish Musical Society awards for the show.
A fundraising Line Dancing event will be held in Greenhills Community Centre on September 15th to help pay some of the costs of bringing the show to Waterford.

An established hillwalking group based at the Square in Tallaght is looking for people who are interested in walking in the hills.

Public Meeting to Save Tallaght Hospital: Labour
The Dublin South West Labour Party has organised a public meeting to highlight public fears as to the future of children’s healthcare in Tallaght Hospital. The meeting will take place: 8pm, Monday March 26 Plaza Hotel, Tallaght.
Labour Leader Pat Rabbitte TD said: “For as long as the Government decision of last summer stands, the only future facing Tallaght Children’s Hospital is ‘death by a thousand cuts,’ to quote Prof Ian Graham, Vice Chairman of Tallaght Hospital.
“When in the Dail on February 27 I asked the Taoiseach if there had been any change in the Government’s decision to relocate Crumlin and Tallaght to the Mater site, he replied: ‘The Deputy asked me whether there is a change in the position and I said there is not’.
“No amount of spinning can hide the formal Government decision.
“As the Government scrambles for a face-saving formula to get them past the General Election, the Taoiseach told me in the Dail that ‘there has been no review of the decision of last summer’. This means that the Government is proceeding to build the new hospital on the site of the Mater. This decision involves the relocation of both Tallaght and Crumlin to the North inner city.
“As a result, Tallaght will be left with a casualty station, or Urgent Care Centre, but no beds. It will be little more than a glorified clinic. This centre will care for children only in limited cases and where the length of the stay is less than 24 hours. It will be staffed by consultants and other staff rotating out from the National Children’s Hospital. However consultants say this is unworkable.
“Tallaght will lose its specialised staff and parents will be asked to travel in today’s congested traffic to the northside.
“It is dishonest of Fianna Fail to pretend that the Mater decision can be implemented and that everything remains more or less the same. We need honest answers Government instead of cynical misrepresentation of their own decision. We then need a commonsense solution in the interests of local families.
“This meeting will provide people with an opportunity to express their concerns over the future of health services for their children.”

Described as music to make you top yourself would be a definite exaggeration more music to prevent you topping yourself. If you are and are not feeling suicidal be there. The Dodder Valley 125 years ago
Press Release: On Wednesday 20th December at 8.00pm, the Local Studies Section of the County Library in Tallaght in association with Tallaght Historical Society will host a slide show The Dodder from Glenasmole to Ringsend in 1881 - An illustrated Lecture using slides taken by Charles Russell. The slide show will be given by Peter Healy, a nephew of the photographer using old glass plate slides. Peter is a brother of the late Paddy Healy, archaeologist and local historian whose books, “All Roads Lead to Tallaght”, “Rathfarnham Roads”, “Glenasmole Roads” and “Archaeology, Early Christian Remains and Local Histories” have been published by South Dublin Libraries.
This is an opportunity not to be missed, a chance to view some remarkable photographic material using a forgotten technology.

Flat rate Sunday 95c fare in November: Dublin Bus
The Echo is carrying a half-page colour advert from Dublin Bus this week offering passengers a "flat rate" of 95c for adults and 65c for children, any Sunday in November, "wherever you're headed."

Tallaght Leisure Centre to open November 13th
Tallaght Leisure Centre is now nearing practical completion, with a number of minor works to be completed. South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd. has been appointed to manage the facility on behalf of the Council and they are currently engaged in testing of the plant and machinery and will also carry out training for the staff to be employed at the centre. Exploring Atlantic Ireland.... An exciting petroleum province
Exploring Atlantic Ireland is a major two day conference and exhibition show organised in partnership with the Petroleum Affairs Division of Ireland’s Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources. The conference is supported by the Petroleum Infrastructure Programme, the PESGB, the Irish branch of the Energy Institute and the Ireland Newfoundland Partnership (INP).
Christmas Sing Along St Maelruains Parish
This annual event will take place on Friday 1st December in the parish centre at 7.00pm. We will be joined again this year by the D.C.C. singers and a visiting Brass Band.Come along and get into the festive spirit while singing Christmas carols, shopping for gifts and hand made decorations made by the craft group including hand made Christmas cards, decorations, hand knitted items, decorated logs and hand make cakes and enjoy a glass of wine and mince pies. Buy a raffle ticket and you may even solve some of your Christmas present list dilemmas!
