Over 8,000 people attended the first Hallowfest 2006 in South Dublin County organised by South Dublin County Tourism to celebrate the tradition of Halloween.
Hallowfest 2007 is the second year of this event that will celebrate the tradition of Halloween as an event for all the family in Tallaght, South Dublin County. This event will take place on over two days and the programme will include the following aspects:

Hillwalking group invites memberships
An established hillwalking group based at the Square in Tallaght is looking for people who are interested in walking in the hills.
Walking takes place every Sunday. Reasonable fitness, rain gear and a packed lunch are required. There are no charges/fees.

SDCC: Refuse Collection May Bank Holiday Weekend
There will be no refuse collection service in South Dublin County on the May Bank Holiday, Monday 7th May 2007.
Householders whose refuse is normally collected on a Monday will receive their collection on the previous Saturday 5th May 2007.
Refuse bins should be left out by 7.30 a.m. for collection.
Please ensure that your roadway is kept clear of parked cars/vehicles on refuse collection day so as to ensure refuse freighters can gain access.
Please note that in accordance with the Bye-laws governing the presentation of waste, the lid of the bin must be fully closed.
The Council has received complaints of bin tags being stolen in some areas. Accordingly, the tag should not be placed on your bin before 7.30 on the morning of your collection.
Green Bin Collection
Householders whose green bins are usually collected around the 7th of the month should check their Green Bin Calendar for alternative arrangements or contact the Oxigen Helpline at 01 - 462 4459.

Public Meeting to Save Tallaght Hospital: Labour
The Dublin South West Labour Party has organised a public meeting to highlight public fears as to the future of children’s healthcare in Tallaght Hospital. The meeting will take place: 8pm, Monday March 26 Plaza Hotel, Tallaght.
Labour Leader Pat Rabbitte TD said: “For as long as the Government decision of last summer stands, the only future facing Tallaght Children’s Hospital is ‘death by a thousand cuts,’ to quote Prof Ian Graham, Vice Chairman of Tallaght Hospital.
“When in the Dail on February 27 I asked the Taoiseach if there had been any change in the Government’s decision to relocate Crumlin and Tallaght to the Mater site, he replied: ‘The Deputy asked me whether there is a change in the position and I said there is not’.
“No amount of spinning can hide the formal Government decision.
“As the Government scrambles for a face-saving formula to get them past the General Election, the Taoiseach told me in the Dail that ‘there has been no review of the decision of last summer’. This means that the Government is proceeding to build the new hospital on the site of the Mater. This decision involves the relocation of both Tallaght and Crumlin to the North inner city.
“As a result, Tallaght will be left with a casualty station, or Urgent Care Centre, but no beds. It will be little more than a glorified clinic. This centre will care for children only in limited cases and where the length of the stay is less than 24 hours. It will be staffed by consultants and other staff rotating out from the National Children’s Hospital. However consultants say this is unworkable.
“Tallaght will lose its specialised staff and parents will be asked to travel in today’s congested traffic to the northside.
“It is dishonest of Fianna Fail to pretend that the Mater decision can be implemented and that everything remains more or less the same. We need honest answers Government instead of cynical misrepresentation of their own decision. We then need a commonsense solution in the interests of local families.
“This meeting will provide people with an opportunity to express their concerns over the future of health services for their children.”

Recycling in South Dublin County area Christmas & New year
Green Bins
Additional dry recyclable material may be left beside the Green Bin from 18th December to 27th January 2007 only provided
- It is clean and bound securely
- It is left in a safe manner for collection
- It contains material that normally goes into the Green Bin only.
- The material should not be put in a plastic bag. Large cardboard boxes and sheets of cardboard should be cut into smaller pieces or brought to the nearest Civic Amenity Centre.
Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre
South Dublin County Councils Civic Amenity Facility at Ballymount will be closed on Christmas Day, St. Stephens Day and New Years Day.

Plaza developer loses 1st round of Planning battle
An order has just been signed making a decision to refuse permission for the Plaza Hotel application... [by The KPL Partnership, Belgard Road for a Proposed Development:
(a) The construction of an additional two recessed floors above the existing recessed fifth floor of Plaza Hotel Complex increasing the height from 6 to 8 storeys above ground level with roof-top plant rooms and roof gardens over providing 18 no. residential units on sixth floor and 16 no. residential units on seventh floor with roof gardens;
(b) the construction of an 8 storey extension to the north/west (over existing surface car park) providing an additional 1,578sq.m. of retail floor space at ground floor; an additional 375sq.m. of offices at first floor; an additional 1,555sq.m. of offices at second floor; an additional 1 no. hotel bedroom and 18 no. suites and 3 no. apartments at third floor level; an additional 1,282sq.m. and change of use of office space at fourth floor to provide an additional 76 no. hotel bedrooms and 18 no. suites and 3 no. apartments; an additional 937sq.m. and change of use offices at fifth floor to 13 no. apartments and 18 no. apartments over existing hotel floor area; 13 no. apartments and (18 no. apartments over existing hotel floor area) at sixth floor; 13 no. apartments and (16 no. apartments over existing hotel floor area) at seventh floor;
(c) change of use of 1,136sq.m. of existing offices on first floor to 702sq.m. spa and leisure centre for the hotel and 434sq.m. creche; and use of existing 155sq.m. atrium as creche play area;
(d) the creation of a new ramp to the basement car park and re-configuration of the existing basement carpark(s);
(e) the re-location of the vehicular access to the north/west boundary to the north/east boundary (Belgard Road) restricting the use to a 'left turn out only';
(f) landscaping works to existing footpaths and resident's roof gardens including re-configuration of surface car parking;
(g) all site development works above and below ground required to facilitate the proposed development. The proposed development will reduce the existing office floor area by 2,713sq.m.; increase the retail area by 1,578sq.m. and the hotel floor area by 5,013sq.m.; provide an additional 77 no. hotel bedrooms and 36 no. 1 bedroom hotel suites, and 97 no. apartments including social/affordable accommodation comprising 5 no. 1-bedroom units, 6 no. bedroom + study units, 54 no. 2 bedroom units, 6 no. 2 bedroom + study units and 26 no. 3-bedroom units. Overall the floor area is increased by 14,246sq.m.]
...for the following reasons:
1. The proposed development would materially contravene the Tallaght Town Centre Local Area Plan by reason of the proposed building height, plot ratio, provision of open space and provision of residential accommodation above the 5th floor (6 storeys). The development would therefore contravene the zoning objective for the area 'to protect, improve and provide for the future development of the County Town of Tallaght' and would be contrary to proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
2. The proposed development by reason of its building height, plot ratio, and provision of open space would result in over-development of the site and would set an undesirable precedent for other similar developments which would in themselves and cumulatively be harmful to the residential amenity of the area and would be contrary to proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
3. The generation of traffic movements created as a result of the proposed egress onto the Belgard Road would endanger public safety by reason of a traffic hazard and would reduce the traffic capacity of this section of the Belgard Road thereby creating traffic congestion.

Tallaght Leisure Centre to open November 13th
Tallaght Leisure Centre is now nearing practical completion, with a number of minor works to be completed. South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd. has been appointed to manage the facility on behalf of the Council and they are currently engaged in testing of the plant and machinery and will also carry out training for the staff to be employed at the centre.
