Tallaght West Childhood Development Initiative (CDI)

The CDI comprises a group of 23 members representing community leaders, residents and professionals who work in the area of Tallaght West. The staff of CDI includes a Project Leader, Dr Katherine Zappone, and a team of administrators and researchers.

The CDI began its work in late 2003 in order to develop a solutions-based 10 year strategy to improve the health, safety and learning of the children of the area and to increase their sense of belonging to their community. Support for the work has been drawn from the children, parents and community members in Tallaght West along with statutory and community-based providers, regional agencies, national institutions and experts.

The CDI has published eight preliminary research documents, culminating in the publication of A Place for Children. CDI is partnered with Atlantic Philanthropies - an international philanthropic organisation - which has invested in the planning phase of the initiative. CDI is also supported by the Dartington Social Research Unit.

In 2006 the CDI [became] a legal entity, with formal links to regional and county structures. It will be a catalyst for further innovation and integration of children's services, act as a commissioner of new services and ensure high quality evaluation of developments.
