"This year marks the 16th year of the global 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence against Women. The 16 Days campaign runs from 25th November to 10th December. It is an international campaign that started in 1991 and now has over 2000 organizations from over 130 countries participating each year. In 1999, the United Nations officially recognized 25th November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.The aims of the campaign are:

• To highlight the prevalence of violence against women.
• To raise awareness of violence against women as a human rights issue at local, national and international level.
• To show solidarity with women around the world organizing to challenge violence against women.
• To put violence against women on the political and media agenda.
• To work towards the elimination of violence against women."
