Wokmen cook up a storm

The Tallaght Echo reports this week on its front page how an army of Wokmen made life hell for a Tallaght resident when they entered his garden on the advice of a builder and cooked Chinese food non-stop until he agreed to pay a long-standing takeaway bill...

The story, which was the main feature in the local newspaper of Thursday, December 7th, was actually about a builder who, with "an army of workmen" trespassed on a property on which he had been building an extension and removed windows without the client's permission. He had been in dispute with the owner over a payment which the client refused to make as he was dissatisfied with the quality of work. Convicting him of trespass, the judge fined the builder €1,250, plus costs, with a six-months suspended sentence.

Does anyone think that since Dave Kennedy left the echo that it's gone to hell...

I think it is full of errors, misquotes and sensationalism that just portrays the community in a negative way than a positive way.

Bring back Dave!

Well, Mr Kennedy sold the shop for a nice sum and left, so he isn't likely to come back.

But I have to say I tend to agree that the reporters seem under pressure to produce "sensationalist" pieces, even if this provokes adverse comments from the readership.

The paper is actively denying any such bias (see recent complaint in Letters Column about report on opening of Community Centre, where, in my opinion, the reporter was really stretching it to find some negative material). The days of "Well will you take one for free anyway" are well and truely over. The new ownership is looking to find a profit come good story or bad.

I was being tongue in cheek about Dave being brought back! Yep - I also read the letter in the Echo regarding the swimming pool and have to say "well done" to whoever wrote it. I think they echoed the sentiment of a lot of the community about the report on the pool.

I also think that Conor Ryan was an excellent journalist and is really making a name for himself with the Echo in Cork but that those who have taken his place are of a "tabloid" mentality. I think the Echo might find their sales falling rather than increasing if they continue their current tack.

I think the Echo is going from strength to strength. The Echo has improved in the last few years. Its got bigger, there are more pages and its chockfull of news. Yes Conor Ryan is an excellent journalist who works with the Irish Examiminer.
As for the Echo being "tabloid" and the journalists being "tabloid". Have you read the Echo recently and noticed its format. Yes its "tabloid". Tabloid is just a page size, nothing more.
The Irish nation needs to lose its hangups about the tabloid paper size.
Ps the Courts pages in the Echo are the best in the Paper.
Their court reporter, (I cant remember his name) does a really excellent job.
Heres to the WOKMEN in the Echo

I think The Echo is less interested in news and more interested in advertising. This week's issue is just full of adverts. As for "Tabloid" being just a page size, maybe the previous commentators regret the newspaper being less all-rounded..? Or am I being obtuse..?
